During the brutally hot days of summer in NYC, most New Yorkers eagerly flee the island of which they reside and escape to trendy Fire Island, the ritzy Hamptons or Snooki’s Jersey Shore. Visiting these popular places might get the New Yorker out of the city, but it does not get the New Yorker away from other city-folk. For a true weekend getaway, try one of the quaint, romantic and even exciting destinations within driving distance of New York City!
For luxury in the mountains escape to Topnotch Resort & Spa in picturesque Stowe, Vermont. At this award-winning tennis resort, feel free to practice your back swing, take in a round of golf, or go horseback riding, biking and golfing. If you’re looking for pure relaxation, look no further than the resort’s topnotch spa. This pet-friendly hotel offers turn down service for your dogs after their long hikes with you on famous Mt. Mansfield. If you want to venture outside of the resort, Stowe offers a plethora of activities. Stowe Village is home to many locally owned shops, delectable restaurants, and is majorly influenced by the art and music scene.
Mirbeau Inn & Spa
Leave the dogs, kids, and all your worries behind when you visit this romantic inn this summer in the storybook village of Skaneateles, New York. The Mirbeau Inn & Spa is reminiscent of an Old World French Country Estate with its exterior architecture, interior décor and landscape design. Let your mind relax as you sink into the most delectable spa treatments imaginable. From honey and wine body wraps to divine indulgence massages for two, the 14,000 square foot facility offers an experience of pure relaxation. Only a 4 hour drive from NYC, don’t miss out on this unique escape.
Mystic, Connecticut offers fun for both families and childless adults. This quaint New England town sits perfectly between New York and Boston but you won’t find a hint of city life here. If traveling with children, don’t miss the Mystic Aquarium, Mystic Seaport and the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat. The little ones are sure to have such a good time that the exhaustion from the day will allow Mom and Dad a quiet (and well-deserved) evening. For an Adults Only trip to Mystic, the opportunities are endless. Art museums, wineries, spas, shopping and nightlife make for a well-rounded and exciting weekend. With casinos like Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods right around the corner you won’t go home disappointed… well, hopefully! Finally, while in town, be sure to visit Mystic Pizza, made famous by the same named 1988 film starring, Julia Roberts. Have a great time in Mystic, I always do!
New Hope, PA
New Hope, PA is a very special place. The notable town is adorned with covered bridges and historical landmarks. New Hope’s streets are lined with antique shops, boutiques, wineries and restaurants that offer lovely views of the Delaware River. If you’re looking for some outdoor adventure, take a trolley or train tour of the scenic area, or go tubing, rafting, kayaking or canoeing on the Delaware River just north of where George Washington historically crossed. In terms of lodging, I can recommend the Barley Sheaf Farm Estate & Spa. The manor house, built in 1740 is situated on 100-acre pasture. They offer private cottages, spa treatments, wine tastings and more. If you’re looking for a complete retreat from the city, this is it. Finally, I would be doing you a disservice if I did not mention the restaurant, Carversville Inn. Having visited many cities in France, the Carversville Inn beats them all with the best escargot I’ve had in my life. If you visit the New Hope area, you do not want to miss this dining experience.
No matter what you do this summer, have a great time! Explore areas you never have before. If you step out of your comfort zone, you might just find yourself more comfortable than you were in the first place!
